Oak Framed Kitchen Extension: Transforming a 19th Century Cottage
Introduction
Our clients from Wiltshire approached us with a clear vision: they wanted to replace an old PVC kitchen extension, complete with a noisy plastic roof, with a bespoke oak extension that would seamlessly integrate with their existing 19th-century cottage.
The goal was to create a beautiful, functional space that would enhance the home’s character while addressing the issues they had with the old extension.
One of the primary objectives was to incorporate a solid slated roof, which would provide durability and a cohesive look, without sacrificing the light and airy feel of the space beneath.
Design
The design phase of this oak-framed kitchen extension was crucial to ensuring the project’s success. Integrating a new structure into an older building, especially one with the unique angles and quirks of a 19th-century cottage, presents significant challenges.
Every detail had to be meticulously planned and measured to guarantee a flawless fit with the existing architecture.
We began by carefully measuring the space, not once, but multiple times, to account for the irregularities of the original structure. The goal was to design a frame that would marry seamlessly with both the existing slate roof of the kitchen and the original clay tile roof above.
This required an in-depth understanding of the building’s existing structure, as well as a flexible design approach to accommodate any unexpected challenges that might arise during construction.
Despite our thorough planning, we encountered a few surprises during the erection of the oak frame. As is often the case with older buildings, adjustments had to be made on-site to ensure a perfect fit.
This meant that after all the careful measuring, we still needed to make some precise cuts to the oak frame to align it with the existing rooflines and walls. These adjustments, while challenging, are a testament to the skill and adaptability of our team.
The end result is a structure that feels as though it has always been a part of the original cottage.
In addition to the structural design, we also replaced the old kitchen window with a like-for-like oak version.
This window not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen but also provides a cohesive look that ties the new extension to the existing building.
The use of oak for both the frame and the window adds warmth and character to the space, creating a welcoming environment that complements the traditional feel of the cottage.
The end result
The project was completed under unique circumstances. Our clients were scheduled to be out of the country for two weeks and entrusted us with the responsibility of completing the extension during their absence. This tight timeframe added an extra layer of pressure, but our team was up to the challenge.
Over the course of two weeks, we worked diligently to bring the design to life. The solid slate roof was installed, providing a durable and weather-resistant covering that perfectly matches the existing slate and clay tile roofs.
Inside, the oak frame not only supports the structure but also adds a beautiful architectural feature that draws the eye and enhances the overall ambience of the kitchen.
The new oak-framed kitchen extension is a testament to the possibilities of combining traditional craftsmanship with modern functionality. The solid oak beams and slates create a timeless look that will age gracefully alongside the original cottage.
The space beneath the roof remains light and airy, thanks to the thoughtful design that maximizes natural light while providing a sturdy and attractive structure above.

Upon their return, our clients were thrilled with the transformation. The extension had been completed on time and exceeded their expectations in terms of both craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. Here’s what they had to say:
