Oak Annexe in Fordingbridge, Hampshire

Introduction

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of the New Forest, our latest project in Lower Daggons, Fordingbridge, represents a perfect blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern sustainability.

Our clients, familiar with our work through three previous projects completed in nearby Alderholt in 2023, approached us with a clear vision: to create a fully self-contained oak annexe that would serve as a retreat for friends and family.

After submitting plans to the local council, we were pleased to learn that the 40-square-meter build could proceed under permitted development, provided we adhered to the specific parameters set out by the New Forest District Council.

Brief

The brief for this project was straightforward yet ambitious. The clients wanted a space that could function as a comfortable, independent living area, complete with an en-suite bathroom and a kitchenette.

It was essential that the annexe not only be practical but also blend harmoniously with its natural surroundings, reflecting the serene beauty of the New Forest.

Moreover, sustainability was a key concern, with a particular emphasis on minimizing the environmental impact of the construction process.

Design

To meet these requirements, we embarked on a design process that prioritized both aesthetics and eco-friendliness. One of the most significant decisions was to build the annexe on ground screws rather than a traditional concrete foundation. This innovative choice significantly reduces the environmental footprint of the building process.

Unlike concrete foundations, which are permanent and have a considerable carbon footprint, ground screws are reversible.

If circumstances ever change, the building can be disassembled, the ground screws removed, and the site restored to its original state with no trace that a structure ever existed there. This approach not only aligns with sustainable building practices but also offers flexibility for future land use.

The structural design of the annexe is equally impressive. The building stands on a 10-meter by 4-meter green oak pegged frame, a nod to traditional building techniques that have stood the test of time.

Green oak is not only durable but also ages beautifully, gradually blending into the landscape as it weathers. The frame was meticulously constructed, with every joint pegged by hand, showcasing the craftsmanship that defines our work.

To ensure the annexe would be comfortable year-round, we worked closely with our structural engineer to incorporate the latest insulation technology, adhering to current building regulations.

The walls, floor, and roof are all insulated to high standards, ensuring the space remains warm in winter and cool in summer.

The building is also fitted with high-efficiency argon-filled glass, which provides excellent thermal insulation while allowing natural light to flood the interior. This careful attention to insulation not only enhances comfort but also reduces energy consumption, further aligning the project with sustainable principles.

The end result

The finished annexe is a testament to what can be achieved when traditional craftsmanship meets modern innovation. Completed in just seven weeks from the installation of the first ground screw to the final handover, the project stands as a model of efficiency without compromising on quality.

The exterior of the building is clad in the finest oak, carefully selected for its durability and natural beauty. The oak cladding will weather over time, taking on a silvery hue that will blend seamlessly with the surrounding woodland.

Complementing the oak cladding is vibrant Yellow Balau decking, a tropical hardwood known for its strength and resistance to decay. The decking provides a durable and attractive outdoor space, perfect for enjoying the tranquil surroundings.

The interior of the annexe is equally impressive. The oak flooring adds warmth and character to the space, while the aluminium bi-fold doors, expertly engineered by Cortizo, open up the living area to the outdoors, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

These doors not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the annexe but also offer practicality, allowing the space to be opened up on warm days to enjoy the fresh forest air.

Our clients were delighted with the final result, praising both the quality of the craftsmanship and the speed with which the project was completed.

They particularly appreciated the sustainable approach we took, which not only minimized the impact on their land but also provided them with a beautiful, functional space that they could enjoy for years to come.

Conclusion

The Oak Annexe in Lower Daggons, Fordingbridge, is more than just an additional living space; it is a reflection of our commitment to blending traditional building methods with modern, sustainable practices.

By choosing to work with green oak and innovative foundation techniques, we were able to create a structure that is both timeless and environmentally responsible.

The project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when quality craftsmanship and sustainability are at the forefront of design and construction.

We are proud to have brought our client’s vision to life and to have added another successful project to our portfolio in the beautiful New Forest region.
